File your taxes for free with

Direct File!

It’s tax season and we know that it can be a stressful time. To help alleviate some of that stress, we’re excited to share a resource: Direct File is a free, easy & secure way to file taxes directly with the IRS.  Go to directfile.irs.gov to get started.

Filing taxes is an important responsibility, and also a source of help for many of us who get hundreds or even thousands of dollars every spring in our tax refunds.

Direct File is a new tool that lets eligible taxpayers file their taxes online directly with the IRS from the convenience of your own smartphone or computer. Direct File allows you to file directly with the government, so it is very secure.  It’s available in English and Spanish and on average takes less than one hour to complete.

How does it work?

  1. 1. Visit irs.gov on your computer, tablet or phone.
  2. 2. Direct File will walk you step-by-step through filing your federal return in under an hour, using simple questions and plain language.
  3. 3. If you live in a state with income taxes: Once you complete your federal taxes, you’ll be taken to a free state filing system for your state. In most states, you’ll have the option to quickly import your federal tax return information to make your state return easy and painless.

What if I need help?

  • When you use Direct File, you will have access to dedicated live chat support from IRS staff in English and Spanish. If needed, you can switch to a phone call with a representative for additional support.

Am I eligible?

  • You can use Direct File if your tax situation from 2024 was relatively straightforward. For example, if you don’t itemize your deductions, your income came primarily from W-2 employment, and you claim common tax credits like the CTC, EITC, or premium tax credit, you're likely eligible. Direct File has a screener tool that will make sure it's the right tool for you before you start filing.

What if I’m an immigrant?

  • Tax filers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) who have previously filed taxes can participate. Tax filers with a Social Security Number (SSN) can apply regardless of having previously filed taxes.
