Recalled Applesauce Pouches

As of November 9, 2023, WanaBana, Schnucks, and Weis have initiated voluntary recalls of the following products:

  • WanaBana brand apple cinnamon fruit purée pouches
  • Schnucks brand cinnamon applesauce pouches
  • Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches

This recall is due to high levels of lead ranging from 4 to 29 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dL) found in children between the ages of 1 to 3 years.

As of November 16, 2023, there have been 34 reported cases in 14 states across the country. In most cases, the children have developed acute lead poisoning and experienced symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, change in activity level, and anemia even though lead toxicity can sometimes be asymptomatic.

If you suspect that your child has consumed these products, please do the following:

  • Get your child tested by their health care provider or Local Health Department.
  • Call the West Virginia Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at 304-558-5388 or toll-free number 1-800-642-8522.
  • Unused batches should be saved for possible testing.
